Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg officially announced Tuesday that Facebook is in the development process of a new “Dislike” button for its users. No mention of a completion date was given but Zuckerberg expects the new feature to be available “soon”.

We’ve heard chatter about the infamous “Dislike” button for some time now. So what’s the hold up? Facebook has set the benchmark for interactive social media and users cant help but feel the need to not only express like…but dislike too. We can’t be happy about everything we see or read, right?

Zuckerberg says that Facebook has been reluctant to release the Dislike button, as they feel it will invite and entice users towards negativity.  Despite the concerns, Zuckerberg says that Facebook understands there are situations that call for an emotion or response other than “like”, especially if the news is sad. The hope is the new button is used as an empathetic way to respond to such things as a death or environmental crisis. “What they really want is the ability to express empathy. Not every moment is a good moment,” explained Zuckerberg.

We’ve always admired Facebook’s ability to offer its users an expressive and innovative platform. We commend Facebook for understanding, so it only makes sense that the feature is added. What do you think of Facebook’s new “Dislike Button”?
